We provide training to teens and young adults regarding the proper ways to respond during interactions with law enforcement, including during motor vehicle stops.
This training incorporates the following topics:
- Understanding the inherent dangers of traffic stops and what they can personally do to ensure the encounter ends peacefully and safely for all parties involved.
- How and where to safely pull over and what actions to take once they are pulled over.
- Like most of the training we provide, we incorporate the idea of empathy and provide insight into what it is like to be a law enforcement officer, conducting a traffic stop.
- Whether we are speaking to community members or law enforcement, we remind everyone that respect is a two-way street and being courteous can go a long way.
- We educate them on what they are obligated to do under the law and also advise them of what their rights are under the law.
- We educate them on what their options are should they receive a summons and take issue with the validity of the stop and/or the alleged traffic violation.
- We educate them on how to file an official complaint should they take issue with how they were treated and/or of the officer’s demeanor.
- Lastly, we educate them on common infractions that can garner unwanted entanglement with the criminal justice system.
