Building Trust - Cops & Communities
Improving Relationships & Building Community Trust
- We have developed training programs geared towards improving the relationship and building trust between the police and our communities, based on our diverse perspectives as proud members of both groups.
- We accomplish this by providing insight and a greater understanding of the challenges both the police and members of the community face, and like much of our training, these programs are centered around increasing empathy by considering each other’s points of view.
- Based on our life experiences, we give each group a glimpse into the lives of the other, open lines of communication, and forge a stronger relationship by highlighting the fact that “we are more alike than unalike.”
Our Cops and Our Communities
- The #1 rule in law enforcement is to go home safe at the end of your shift.
- As proud former police offices, we agree with that rule, but take it one step further.
- Everyone Has a Right to Go Home Safe.
- Again, based on our diverse perspectives as proud members of our communities and former law enforcement officers, we look to be the bridge that leads each group to a better understanding of the other.
Police Legitimacy
- Police Legitimacy a quality possessed by an authority, law, or institution that leads others to feel the authority is entitled to be accepted and obeyed.
- When the public view the police as legitimate, meaning entitled to exercise their authority in order to maintain social order, manage conflicts, and solve problems in the community, they are more likely to voluntarily defer to police action and less likely to challenge it.
- Police gain legitimacy and acceptance of their authority when they are viewed by the public as fairly distributing police services amongst all people and throughout all communities equally. (aka “distributive fairness”).
Procedural Justice
- Procedural Justice is defined as the procedures used by police officers in which citizens are treated fairly and with proper respect as human beings.
- If the public judges that the police exercise their authority using fair procedures, the public will view the police as legitimate and are more willing to cooperate with policing efforts.
- When officers give citizens a voice (listen) and are objective and respectful, police officers gain the trust of the citizenry.
- The procedural justice process of fairness and respect leads citizens to view the police as legitimate and trustworthy.
- At Synergy Consulting & Training Group, we offer training to both law enforcement and members of the community, focused on how they can proactively improve the relationship between the two groups by better understanding the challenges each group faces daily.
